BIOMEDICAL CORROSION

Professor

Biomedical corrosion is extremely complex because the physico-chemical reactions between the biomaterials and biological fluids are poorly understood. Useful implant materials must meet stringent requirements with regard to compatibility with body fluids, corrosion resistance and mechanical and electrical properties. In cooperation with industrial scientists we are studying the behavior of metal alloys in physicalogical fluids. The adsorption of biomolecules, which have a pronounced influence on electrochemical and corrosion reactions, is being studied with STM.
