Notice: William H. Smyrl Student Award through the
Electrochemical Society (announcement will download in Acrobat Reader format)
Fabrice Coustier will be leaving us in October 1998 for a brief vacation and to
get his working Visa in France before starting work near San Francisco, California.
Fabrice had left us for a few months earlier this summer but due to a delay in getting his
Visa, he came back to work with us until the Visa is ready for him.
Luis Garfias-Mesias accepted a job on the East Coast. He will be leaving us
sometime in November of 1998 after his baby is born.
Ryan Gordon joined Prof. William Smyrl's group as a post-doc September of
1998. Ryan recently
received his Ph.D. with Dr. Edward L. Cussler from our Department.
Markus Buechler joined Prof. William Smyrl's group as a post-doc in
September of 1998.
Stefano Passerini left us in September of
1998
for a six-month leave of absence, except for three weeks in November, to be with his
family in Italy.
Congratuations to Thierry Sarnet and his wife who had a baby in July of
1998.
The summer of 1998 we welcomed Jeremy Weaver, Dorinda
Gordon, and Gabriel Jarero into Professor Smyrl's research group as
summer
undergraduate researchers.
Congratuations to Jason Hill who has left us for a position in Wisconsin
starting July 1998.
The spring of 1998 we welcomed Kim Graham and Wijaya
Martanto to Professor Smyrl's research group. They are undergraduates working
with Stefano Passerini and Jun Xu, respectively.
We were happy to welcome Fabrice Coustier back with us after a few months
vacation this summer of 1998. Fabrice will be leaving us, again, sometime this fall for the
position he accepted last spring in California as soon as his Visa is ready.
William Smyrl and David Shores were awarded the 1998 Society
Fellows at the May 1998 Electrochemical Society meeting in San Diego.
Plans are being made for an addition to Amundson Hall. Construction is hopeful to
begin during the fall of 1998. The old Mines and Metallurgy part of Amundson Hall will
be added on to all floors above and below ground to make more room for lab and office
space.
We were sorry to see Fabrice Coustier leave in March of 1998 but we know
he went on for the big bucks with a small company in Livermore, California, to work in the
same company with our former post-doc, Andy Tipton.
The week we sent Fabrice on his way to California we gained a new post-doc from
Italy, Marco Georgetti, to become a part of Dr. Smyrl's group.
During the past couple of years we have had several Corrosion Center personnel get
married. We would like to congratulate
Leland Manhart,
Gregg Deluga,
Mike Parent,
Shawn Kelley,
Luis Garfias-Mesias respoke his vows to his wife in her home country of
Singapore and are now expecting a baby in October of 1998,
and
former Corrosion Center Graduate Student/Post-doc Maher Alodan got married in
his home country of Saudia Arabia.
Wes Henderson joined Dr. Smyrl's group as a Research Assistant with the
new Graduate Student Class arriving in the fall of 1997.
Matt Fay received his graduate degree in December 1997 and left for a
permanent
job in a battery company in Michigan, and Tariq Ahmed also left us for a
permanent job.
Before 1997 was over Amy Buekelman and Kevin Berghauer went
on to bigger and better things. In their place G. "Lon" Shi has joined the group as
an
undergraduate worker.
We welcomed several new undergraduate research assistants to our research groups in
the Corrosion Center during 1997.
Kevin Berghauer is working with Dr. Smyrl's group, Amy Buekelman is working with Dr. Smyrl's group, Jason Hill is working in Dr. Smyrl's group with Dr. Passerini, Andrew Kinser is working with Dr. Smyrl's group, Ken Rush is working with Dr. Shores' group, and Chris Wertz is working with Dr. Venkatasetty's group.
Pat James left the Corrosion Center the end of October 1997 for a
position in Boulder, Colorado.
We would like to welcome Thierry Sarnet from France to the Corrosion
Research Center during the summer of 1997. He is working with Dr. David Shores on
"Stresses and Fractures at High
Temperature in Oxide Scales on Metal Alloys".
Toshi Momma left the Corrosion Center early September of 1997 for a
position in Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan.
Jun John Xu won the 1996 Student Research Award of the Battery Division
of the Electrochemical Society for his studies of the lithium electrochemistry in polyether
electrolytes using ultramicroelectrodes. He was presented the award at the 190th ECS
meeting in San Antonio, TX. He also received the S.J. Stein award of the University of
Pennsylvania for his Ph.D. thesis research.
Maher Alodan completed his tenure with the Corrosion Research Center June
30, 1997. He is now working at Seagate in the Twin Cities.
Congratulations to Shawn Kelley who passed his preliminary oral
examination for his Ph.D. degree this spring of 1997.
Stefano Passerini came back to the Corrosion Research Center September 30,
1996,
after leaving to work in Italy for about 9 months. He is again working for Dr. Smyrl as a
Sr. Research Associate.
Gregg Deluga recently joined our Center. He is working for Dr. Shores as a
Jr. Scientist.
Congratulations to Nancy Hamilton on her new job over at the St.
Anthony Falls Hydraulic Plant. Her last day as our Accounts Specialist was September 13,
1996,
after working for the Corrosion Research Center for 15 years. Good Luck Nancy!
Congratulations to Dinh Ba Le who passed his preliminary oral examination
on Monday, June 18. Dinh Ba is advised by Dr. William H. Smyrl.
