Research in the Frisbie Group

Our research program focuses primarily on thin film semiconductor materials, especially organic semiconductors, and their applications in electronic and electrochemical devices. Key themes include understanding the physics of charge transport in organic semiconductor films, characterizing structure-property relationships, developing novel device architectures, and designing new additive manufacturing strategies for creating flexible circuitry. In relation to the last point, we have a large collaborative effort focused on new strategies for precision printing of electronic inks (metallic, semiconducting, or insulating) on flexible plastic ‘webs’ in roll-to-roll formats for applications in chemical sensing or displays, for example.

Members of the research group develop experimental skills in thin film growth, micro- and nanofabrication, printing, electronic device characterization, electrochemistry, and structural and compositional analysis by a variety of techniques including X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This technical expertise, combined with speaking and writing skills, lead students to a variety of promising careers in industry and academia.
